Stellar Student: Helen Holt

Helen Holt, a graduate student in UVI’s newly established Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program in Marine and Environmental Science, is carving out a meaningful path at the intersection of research, collaboration, and environmental management. Her master’s project focuses on establishing a territorial Sargassum Working Group modeled after successful efforts across the Caribbean partnering with local organizations such as; the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), and the Coral World Ocean and Reef Initiative (CWORI).

Through this initiative, Holt serves as a liaison among agencies, working to strengthen communication, coordinate research, and support data-driven decision-making surrounding Sargassum inundation in the USVI. Her project builds regional efforts to understand when Sargassum functions as a critical habitat and when it becomes a threat to coastal ecosystems. This work contributes valuable insights to coral reef health, endangered species protection, and nearshore water quality. Now completing a full-time paid internship with CWORI as part of her Professional Internship Experience (PIE), Holt is gaining hands-on training in environmental management, data analysis, report writing, and stakeholder engagement.

Holt’s journey to UVI is a testament to curiosity, resilience, and a passion for the natural world. Her early fascination with marine life led her to an internship at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and bachelor’s degree in biology with extensive field research experience in Australia. Over the past year and a half at UVI, she has immersed herself fully in campus life, traveling with the Buccaneers as an assistant basketball coach, serving as a laboratory manager in the College of Science and Mathematics, and earning both the Vembu Subramian and S-STEM scholarships. Looking ahead, Holt hopes to continue living a life driven by curiosity, hard work, and passion. These values guide her as she contributes to meaningful environmental research and prepares for a future defined not by a single role, but by continuous growth and discovery.
