It is my pleasure to welcome Dr. Owen Mtambo to the University of the Virgin Islands as our new Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Science. Dr. Mtambo brings with him a wealth of international experience in statistics, biostatistics, and data science, along with a strong record of teaching, research, and mentoring. His expertise in advanced statistical modeling, health research, and data-driven decision-making will strengthen UVI’s efforts in research, innovation, and institutional analytics. We are excited about the impact he will make as he works across the University to advance our data science initiatives and help prepare the next generation of leaders in this important field.

Dr. Owen Mtambo joined the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Science in September 2025. He previously served as Biostatistician and Head of the Data Science Department at the Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) in Malawi. He holds a PhD in Statistics (UNISA), an MSc in Biostatistics (University of Malawi), a BSc in Mathematical Sciences (MUBAS), and a Diploma in Education (Domasi College of Education/UNIMA).
With over 18 years of university teaching and research experience in Malawi, Namibia, and South Africa, Dr. Mtambo has taught mathematics, statistics, and data science, supervised more than 20 graduate students, and published over a dozen peer-reviewed articles. His research has focused on health-related applications of advanced statistical modeling, including spatio-temporal analyses of childhood overweight and obesity.
Dr. Mtambo’s expertise spans biostatistics, epidemiology, statistical modeling, data science, and machine learning, with proficiency in tools such as R, Python, Stata, and Power BI. He is also experienced in data visualization, spatial analysis (GIS), and interdisciplinary research collaborations. At UVI, Dr. Mtambo contributes to grant development, biomedical and data science research, institutional analytics, course and program development in data science, and supervision of research interns and graduate assistants. He also manages databases and develops Power BI dashboards in collaboration with the University’s IT Services team.
