Letter from the President: March 2026

By, President Dr. Safiya George

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

As we move through March, we pause to celebrate the rich heritage, resilience, and cultural pride that define the Virgin Islands during Virgin Islands History Month, while also honoring the extraordinary leadership, innovation, and impact of women during Women’s History Month. This year, these reflections carry added significance as we proudly mark the University of the Virgin Islands’ 64th Charter Day, a powerful reminder of our enduring role as a catalyst for opportunity, progress, and transformation across our territory and the wider Caribbean. For more than six decades, UVI has stood as a place where history is preserved, futures are shaped, and the promise of education continues to uplift generations.

Today, as higher education evolves and new pathways expand for Virgin Islands students, UVI is uniquely positioned to lead with purpose and confidence. We are strengthening our identity as the educational anchor of the Virgin Islands, an accessible, high-quality starting point for higher learning, deeply connected to the needs of our workforce and community. At UVI, students can launch meaningful careers right here at home while also preparing to pursue opportunities across the mainland and beyond. Our focus on workforce readiness, experiential learning, innovation, and community partnership ensures that a UVI education is both relevant and empowering.

Together, we will continue to build a future where access, affordability, and excellence go hand in hand. By embracing new possibilities and remaining grounded in our mission, we reaffirm our commitment to being a university that opens doors, serving as both a launchpad for individual success and a driving force for the Virgin Islands’ growth and prosperity.

With Care,

Dr. Safiya George

President, University of the Virgin Islands
