Honorary Degree Conferred to VI Ambassador & UVI Commencement 2026 Keynote Speaker, Dr. Adam O

As we bask in the afterglow of UVI Commencement 2026, we have the honour of reconnecting with the keynote speaker at this year’s Commencement ceremonies and Orville E Kean Campus Honorary Degree recipient. A VI Ambassador with a spirit as infectious as his music, and whose gracious humility truly exemplifies how one can use their own light to help others shine, we give another standing ovation to the newly inducted Dr. Adam O.

To those who may not know, who is Dr. Adam “Adam O” O’Neal?

I’m Dr. Adam O, a recording artist, songwriter, entrepreneur, St. Vincent–born and a proud son of the Virgin Islands, as well as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. For many years, I’ve had the privilege of representing our culture on stages around the world through music and storytelling. Beyond entertainment, I’m passionate about creating opportunities, preserving our Caribbean identity, and inspiring others to believe that greatness can come from small islands. Whether through music, business, or mentorship, my goal has always been to make my community proud and leave a positive impact.

You have long represented the Virgin Islands on the international stage, spreading the culture and arts of region globally. What was your initial reaction when you received the invitation to be the keynote speaker for UVI’s 2026 Commencement Ceremonies?

I was truly humbled. I’ve been fortunate to receive recognition and accolades throughout my career, but this invitation felt different. To be asked by the University of the Virgin Islands to speak to the next generation of leaders was both an honor and a tremendous responsibility. My first thought was, “This is bigger than me.” It felt like a full-circle moment and an opportunity to pour back into the community that has supported me throughout my journey. Finding out from UVI President Dr. Safiya George that I was actually voted by the students to receive this doctorate meant the world to me. I often struggle with imposter syndrome and sometimes question whether I’m worthy of high praise, but knowing that my work and my career resonate in the hearts of the students in this way is something I will cherish forever and use as fuel to keep going, no matter how challenging the journey becomes.

Having had time to reflect, what has this opportunity meant to you?

Personally, it has been one of the greatest honors of my life. It reminded me that impact goes far beyond music and accolades. Professionally, it reinforced that leadership, service, and culture are deeply connected. To stand before graduates and encourage them to pursue their dreams was incredibly meaningful, and receiving an honorary doctorate from such a respected institution is something I will cherish forever.

One of the most notable elements of your keynote speakership, is that you delivered two unique commencement addresses. What led you to make that choice, and what inspired each Campus’ address?

I wanted each graduating class to feel that the message they received was uniquely theirs. Although the themes were similar, I knew that each campus had its own spirit and energy. I never wanted anyone to feel as though they were hearing a recycled speech. I approached each address with authenticity, tailoring the stories and messages to reflect the audience before me. My goal was simple to encourage every graduate to embrace their purpose and understand that their journey is uniquely their own.

After President George conferred your honourary degree, you shared a very special, unscripted, moment with one of our musically gifted graduates. Can you take us back to that moment?

That was one of the most special moments of the entire weekend because it was completely unexpected. One of UVI’s talented vocalists, Kay Jalisa, was performing a rendition of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” and at some point the band director signaled for me to get ready. I honestly had no idea what was about to happen.

The next thing I knew, I was handed a microphone and the band launched into my song, “Socamazing.” To my surprise, Kay joined in, singing and harmonizing with me. It became this beautiful, spontaneous moment that neither of us had planned.

What touched me most was realizing that my music has found a home beyond the fetes and festival stages. To hear students and musicians in an institution of higher learning embrace my work in that way was incredibly humbling. It reminded me that music is more than entertainment, it’s culture, connection, and legacy.

And to experience that moment after being honored by the University of the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean’s only Historically Black College and University, made it even more meaningful. It warmed my heart to know that the music I’ve created is living on in classrooms, band rooms, and among young scholars and professionals who will carry our culture forward. As an artist, there are few gifts greater than knowing your work has transcended the stage and become part of something larger than yourself.

As a newly-minted member of the Bucs Family, what does the University of the Virgin Islands mean to you?

UVI represents excellence rooted in Caribbean identity. It represents opportunity, innovation, and the belief that greatness can emerge from small islands and impact the world. Being welcomed into the Buccaneer family is an honor I carry with immense pride and gratitude. I see UVI as a beacon for our people and proof that world-class talent and leadership can come from the Virgin Islands.

Define Success

Success, to me, is living with purpose and leaving people better than you found them. It’s not simply measured by awards, recognition, or financial achievement. True success is being able to create opportunities, inspire others, and remain grounded in your values while doing meaningful work. If I can positively impact someone else’s life, then I consider myself successful.

Why does what you do matter?

Because representation matters. Growing up in the Virgin Islands, I understand how powerful it is to see someone from your community achieving things that once seemed impossible. Music gave me a voice, but my purpose has always been bigger than music. I want to preserve our culture, tell our stories, and inspire others to believe that their dreams are valid, regardless of where they begin.

As a multi-talented artiste, what advice would you give an aspiring multi-hyphenate?

Don’t put yourself in a box. God gives each of us unique gifts, and we shouldn’t be afraid to explore them. Stay curious, stay disciplined, and understand that success rarely happens overnight. Protect your integrity, invest in yourself, and remember that consistency often outperforms talent when talent lacks discipline. Most importantly, never allow fear to convince you to shrink who you are. You don’t have to choose between your passions you simply have to learn how to manage them wisely.

What’s next for Dr. Adam O?

I’m excited about continuing to create music, expand my entrepreneurial ventures, and develop initiatives that empower the next generation of artists and leaders. I want to continue representing the Virgin Islands on a global stage while helping create opportunities for others. I believe there is still much work to be done, and I look forward to the next chapter with gratitude, purpose, and a commitment to serving my community.
