In March, I had the privilege of serving as keynote speaker for the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands Humanities Conference, held at the University of the Virgin Islands under the theme “USVI Voices: Heritage, Harmony, and Horizons.”
The conference brought together scholars, educators, artists, students, and community
leaders to explore the cultural, historical, and intellectual forces that shape our Territory. It was both a moment of reflection and a call to action, an opportunity to affirm the critical role humanities play in strengthening who we are as a people and how we move forward together.
In my remarks, I reflected on the power of heritage as both our foundation and our responsibility. The Virgin Islands is rich in culture, shaped by resilience, creativity, and a shared history that continues to inform our identity. As the Territory’s public university and an HBCU, UVI carries a unique responsibility not only to educate, but to preserve, elevate, and carry forward the legacy entrusted to us.
I also spoke about harmony, not as the absence of differences, but as the alignment of purpose. Progress in the Virgin Islands depends on strong partnerships across institutions, organizations, and communities. At UVI, we see ourselves as deeply embedded within the community, working collaboratively through workforce development, research, and outreach to strengthen the social and economic fabric of our Territory.
Finally, I emphasized the importance of horizons, the expansion of opportunity, knowledge, and impact. UVI is in a period of transformation, strengthening academic programs, advancing research, leveraging technology, and investing in student success to meet the evolving needs of our community. Our goal is clear: to ensure that our students are not only prepared to succeed but empowered to lead.
Throughout the address, I underscored a central message: the University of the Virgin Islands is more than an institution of higher education, it is a strategic asset for this Territory. Our work extends beyond the classroom to include economic development, innovation, cultural preservation, and community partnership. When UVI is strong, the Virgin Islands is strong.
The conference also highlighted the importance of collaboration. The future we envision for the Virgin Islands will not be built by any one institution alone, but through shared commitment, aligned effort, and intentional partnership. Organizations like the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands play a vital role in convening voices, investing in ideas, and strengthening the capacity needed to move our Territory forward.
As I shared in closing, the story of the Virgin Islands is still being written, and each of us has a role to play in shaping it. Through education, partnership, and investment in our people, we have the opportunity to build a future that reflects the full promise and potential of this Territory.
This is Grand Momentum in action, honoring our past, strengthening our present, and intentionally building what comes next.
