On April 9, 2026, I had the pleasure of welcoming authors, scholars, students, and community members to the evening reception of the 2026 Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Book Fair, hosted at the University of the Virgin Islands.
The event brought together a vibrant community of literary voices to celebrate the richness and impact of Caribbean storytelling.
Under this year’s theme, “Caribbean Literature: A Force of Representation,” the festival highlighted the critical role that literature plays in shaping identity, preserving history, and ensuring that Caribbean stories are told authentically and on our own terms.
In my welcome remarks, I emphasized that storytelling is not simply an art form, it is a powerful force for representation, affirmation, and transformation. Caribbean literature has long served as a vehicle for documenting our experiences, resisting erasure, and elevating the voices of our people. At UVI, we view this work as central to our mission, recognizing that when students see themselves reflected in what they read and study, it expands their sense of possibility.
This gathering was a meaningful reminder that literature connects us, not only to our past, but to one another, and plays a vital role in shaping the future of our region.
Takeaway: Representation in storytelling matters. When we tell our own stories, we preserve our identity, empower our people, and create pathways for future generations to see themselves and their potential more clearly.
