2025 Summer Bridge Programme

By Dr. Maria Fleming

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) recently concluded its annual Summer Bridge Program with a commencement ceremony on July 18, 2025, held on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. The program’s research efforts began in 2011, which launched the pilot program in 2012, marking its years of dedication to preparing high school seniors for the transition to college.

Program Highlights

This year, 32 students from St. Croix, St. Thomas, and the mainland participated in the intensive program. Participants engaged in a rigorous academic curriculum, taking foundational courses in math, reading, writing, and freshmen development seminars. They also benefited from college preparatory resources and peer-to-peer tutoring sessions. The courses were taught by UVI faculty Dr. Vanda Espinosa, Dr. Sharon Charles, Dr. Maria Fleming, and Ms. Leslie Greene.

In addition to academics, students experienced full residential immersion, staying on campus to fully embrace college life. They also had opportunities to explore local culture and history through various field trips and events, including:

· Sunrise at Point Udall

· Mango Melee

· St. Croix island tour

· Sports tournaments

· Paté Festival

Achievements and Commencement

The students demonstrated significant academic success, achieving an average pass rate of over 80% in their classes. The program culminated in a commencement ceremony where Didier Hughes III, a former Summer Bridge student from 2016, delivered the keynote address. Hughes shared inspiring words of wisdom as the students prepared to embark on their college journeys.
